Departure: 17:00
Ketchikan is a city and the borough seat of the Ketchikan Gateway Borough in Alaska, and is the state’s most south‑easterly major settlement. The downtown area is designated as a National Historic District. At the 2010 census it had a population of 8,050, making it the fifth most populous city in Alaska, and the tenth most populous community when census‑designated places are included. The wider borough—which includes suburbs to the north and south along the Tongass Highway (generally regarded as part of Ketchikan, though outside the city limits) and small rural settlements mostly accessible by water—had a population of 13,477 at the same census, with US Census estimates putting the 2019 population at 13,901. Incorporated on 25 August 1900, Ketchikan is the oldest surviving incorporated city in Alaska, as consolidation and unification elsewhere led to the dissolution of other city governments. It is located on Revillagigedo Island, named in 1793 by Captain George Vancouver.
Ketchikan takes its name from Ketchikan Creek, which runs through the town and flows into the Tongass Narrows just south‑east of the downtown area. “Ketchikan” derives from the Tlingit name for the creek, Kitschk‑hin, whose meaning is uncertain. It may mean “the river belonging to Kitschk”; other accounts say it means “Thundering Wings of an Eagle”. In modern Tlingit, the name is Kichx̱áan.
